I would have rated it more highly if the product had included a warning about these things on the box. After using it and blowing my nose afterwards, I ended up with fluid and mucus behind BOTH eardrums. I'll offer three warnings for those reading this: 1) DO NOT blow your nose very hard after using the Neti pot - this will blow mucus/fluid into your ears, 2) DO NOT tilt your head too far to the side while using the product so that water runs into your ear canal, and 3) DO NOT try and swallow (even slightly) while using the product - this, too, can cause fluid to run into your ears. In fact, there is so much water in one of my ears that my ear canal is bulging from the pressure.
I had a bad sinus infection and ear infection and decided to try this Neti pot after reading so many wonderful reviews. To me, this is nothing less than negligence and carelessness on the part of the manufacturer. My sinuses did feel better after using it, but since it has caused MAJOR ear problems for me now (my ears take forever to drain and are prone to ongoing infections when exposed to water), I had to give it only one star. BAD IDEA.
There was absolutely no warning about this on the packaging. I am beyond disappointed. I used the product as directed in the instructions, and I even watched a couple of videos online to see exactly how to use it. I went to my doctor the very next morning, and he said he's never seen my ears look this bad.
I advise it to others when I see they would need it. I am pretty happy. I think that its due to the product. I don't deal with sinus issues often like I use to. The product works well. I use it a few times a month and not disappointed with the purchase.
I found it a little difficult to get the amount of salt just right. I bought one of these about 2 years ago after seeing a similar one on Oprah. I've found it to be very effective when I have a cold or allergies or sometimes during the winter when my nose just feels dry. Two thumbs up.
With my habit of dropping things in the sink, this works just fine. Simple product, easy to use, and it's effective. Some are glass or ceramic instead of plastic like this one which isn't really very exotic looking but gets the job done. They've been around for centuries and used in ancient times which makes them seem kind of exotic.
You also want to use lukewarm water as your nose can be pretty sensitive. Using the little packets is enough of a convenience that I ordered a refill box SinuCleanse Saline Solution 60 Refill Packets SNC-IRG60 of those.These pots look kind of like a cross between an Aladdin's magic lamp and a teapot and come in all sorts of materials, sizes and brands. Someone actually did a demo on the show (can't remember if Oprah tried it herself) and said that it really cleared her sinuses. If you use too much it burns.
You can also use a pinch of sea salt and a pinch of baking soda to make your own if you like. It took a little while to get the hang of using it, mainly just how far to tilt your head to the side and breathe through your mouth rather than your nose. I found that it helped cleared by nose for several hours when I had a cold and when I was getting over the cold or had a runny nose due to allergies it made my nose and sinuses feel a lot better.It comes with some little measured packets that contain Sodium Bicarbonate and Sodium Chloride (baking soda and salt) that were easy to use.
Tip: When I did a whole packet at once, it stung at first. I ordered this last year and it has been awesome. I do it before bed and I wake up without the stuffy nose I used to. Less chance I'll break it.
Easy to clean and durable. I see no need for ceramic. I highly recommend. It is much more soothing and feels better when its a little warm versus very cold.
It clears everything out and I can breathe. I also recommend keeping the water tepid. It works great and I get clear sinuses every time. But now I only use half a packet and that works great.
I used my neti pot and didn't have a problem all summer. When I have a cold, I use this before bed and it works better that my nasal decongestant pills. I have allergies but was having issues with my allergy medicine so I stopped taking it.
For the price, you can get one at Target that's bigger and easier to use. I just received this, I bought it as a gift and am dissapointed. It's small & cheap plastic.
